to the website of the Balkan Rock Legends!
The band was formed in the summer of 2002 in Amsterdam
and plays the so-called "yugo-rock".
The music and the band are legendary, not only by name but per definition as
they are a living reminiscence of a certain kind of music and of a country that
does not exist anymore, a country destroyed by politics, its name erased and
its history thrown into the garbage bin of the times gone by.
"We have a secret bond…" These verses are from Dusko Trifunovic, a
poet from Sarajevo, and accompanied by tunes of Goran Bregovic they became the
singing truism of many generations. These were the people who were happy to be
right where they were, "right there right then". They only sometimes
wished they could be in London, but they more often appreciated the fact they
were not in East Berlin. In the years to come the lines became a dictum adopted
by a generation which choose to build an identity based on rock'n'roll
and similar (underground) (sub)cultures, and above all keep away from everything
that stank of nationalism. Except when the national team was playing!
We are happy these people are still out there as they are the ones who inspired
and motivated Balkan Rock Legends to appeal to this "secret bond" and
remind everyone they shouldn't forget the inexplicable alchemy which sparkled
in the air when we were listening to Radio Luxemburg, buying those enormous LPs
and funny audio tapes, radios, magnetic tapes and CDs, electrical guitars and
amplifiers, drums and mixers, leather and Allstars ("starke"), Doc
Martens ("martinke") and jeans ("kaubojke")…We should
remember how we used to play and sing and read and write, be it lyrical poems
or revolutionary articles, or listened to music and composed it, to the concerts
and literature readings we went to, and exhibitions and theater…
Those days don't have to be the thing of the past. You can relive some
of it at the concerts of Balkan Rock Legends which are performances of at least
three hours, and without a break! In so doing we wish to transform and contribute
a positive connotation to a certain perception of something which has been difficult
for all of us, namely nostalgia. We are aware of its complexity yet we are positive
that we can generate an atmosphere in which a total amalgamation of the band
and the public will not only be possible but will lead to such an euphoria that
each and everyone present will have the time of their life, in the most positive
way imaginable.
Last but not least, there is another very important reason for this group to
come to existence. There is now a younger generation out there, which never had
the chance to feel the taste of the ex-you rock scene. The group wants to reach
out to them and let them see what they have missed, and give them the opportunity
not to forget where they come from. We are happy to see that we already achieved
this goal because since the formation of the Balkan Rock Legends and its surfacing
on the music scene, several other groups came into existence, composed of musicians
who were still in school when the war in ex-Yugoslavia started.
Nonetheless, these are just words on paper, and even though they serve its purpose,
words are just means to give you an idea about the band. But they cannot be a
proper substitute for what we are really about – and that's Balkan
Rock Legends live!
